About This Case
This patient had been struggling with constantly chipping front teeth, and overall discolouration, due to years of tooth grinding and cumulative coffee stains. She was also struggling with flossing due to crowding of lower front teeth.
The upper teeth had gradually over-erupted as they were worn shorter, resulting in a ‘gummy smile’.
On the recommendation of Dr. Jarrad Elson, she embarked on a two-year course of orthodontics to intrude and align the teeth, before moving to the restorative phase.
The Details
Primary treatment: Orthodontics, gum recontouring surgery, ceramic and composite veneers.
Treatment time: Two years of orthodontics, followed by eight months of restorative treatment.
Following orthodontic treatment, it was identified through a smile design that not only would the teeth need to be lengthened, but the gums would need to be altered to create a harmonious smile.
The restorative treatment took eight months. Following gum recontouring surgery, provisional restorations were placed while the soft tissues were allowed to mature for a period of six months.
Following this, the temporary restorations were removed and ceramic veneers were fabricated and bonded.
Composite resin veneers were then placed using injection-moulding on the second premolar and first molars, to ensure no shade discrepancy in her broad smile.
The patient was then instructed to wear a night guard to prevent damage to the veneers from night time grinding.
